At Lakeview Nurseries, we’re passionate about plants and the critical role they play in supporting our ecosystem, especially the pollinators that are vital to our existence. Our commitment to the Lunenburg Community Pollinator Habitat goes beyond mere gardening; it’s about sustaining life and fostering a healthy environment for future generations.
Situated less than two miles from us, in the picturesque fields just of off Hollis Hills Road, the Lunenburg Pollinator Habitat is a haven for native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, all providing essential support to our local pollinators. These small but mighty creatures are in dire need of help, and we’re proud to be part of the solution. Our involvement includes donating perennials, shrubs and even trees along with assisting with when needed, helping to mow and maintain pathways, ensuring the habitat remains accessible and thriving.
This year, we’ve embarked on a particularly exciting project: germinating zinnias, cosmos, and other pollinator-friendly annuals. These plants will be given to volunteers to nurture at home, creating a vibrant feast for butterflies as they arrive in the spring. It’s an endeavor that brings a smile to our faces, despite the ironic twist of us plant geeks eagerly growing beautiful blooms destined to be devoured by “bugs.”
The journey of the Pollinator Habitat began with Ginny Albertson’s vision in 2016, and thanks to the unwavering support of the Lunenburg Conservation Commission, it has blossomed into a community jewel. Richard Bursch from Lakeview Nurseries has been a pivotal figure, serving diligently on the Conservation Commission from the initial planning stages to the present. His brother, Mark Bursch of Lakeview Landscaping, has consistently provided essential mowing and equipment support. However, the habitat’s success is not just their story; it’s a testament to the collective effort of many volunteers from the community. In just eight years, these dedicated individuals have transformed the Habitat into the thriving sanctuary it is today. Their collaborative spirit and shared commitment have been instrumental in building and maintaining this vital resource. With open houses and guided tours, the Habitat not only educates visitors on the importance of pollinators but also demonstrates the powerful impact of community-driven environmental stewardship in creating and sustaining natural ecosystems.
At Lakeview, we’re not just growing plants; we’re cultivating a legacy of environmental stewardship, one seedling at a time. As we continue to support the Pollinator Habitat, we are reminded of the interconnectedness of life and the joy of contributing to a cause that benefits not just our local community, but the planet as a whole. Join us in this delightful dance of nature, where every plant, and every pollinator, plays a crucial part in the symphony of life.
