Air Plants Have Landed at Lakeview!

No soil? No problem!

We’ve been having a little fun with Air Plants (Tillandsia) lately, and a fresh batch has just arrived at Lakeview. Along with some beautiful individual specimens, we’ve brought in all sorts of creative ways to display them.

Look for all sorts of creative displays, from whimsical hanging arrangements and glass terrariums to decorative pieces that make it easy to show off your Air Plants at home. We also have living Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides), which, despite its name, isn’t actually a moss at all. It’s a Tillandsia and a member of the same plant family as our other Air Plants!

But How Do You Take Care of an Air Plant?

Air Plants are a little different from your typical houseplant. They don’t need to be planted in soil, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need water!

LIGHT: Give your Air Plant plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. A spot near a bright window is great, but avoid intense, hot direct sun.

WATER: Give your plant a thorough misting 1–3 times per week, depending on how warm and dry your home is. Most Air Plants can also be soaked in water for about 20–30 minutes once a week.

DRY IT OUT: This is the big one! After watering, gently shake off excess water and place your Air Plant somewhere with good air circulation so it can dry completely within a few hours. Water sitting down inside the plant can lead to rot.

SPANISH MOSS: Your Spanish Moss is alive, too! Give it bright, indirect light and thoroughly wet the entire bundle when watering. Because it has lots of thin leaves and plenty of surface area, it can dry out faster than some of the chunkier Air Plants, so keep an eye on it and adjust your watering accordingly.

KEEP IT WARM: Normal indoor temperatures are just fine. Protect your Air Plants from freezing temperatures and cold drafts.

FEEDING: Air Plants can be fertilized about once a month with an appropriate water-soluble fertilizer at a diluted rate.

And that’s really about it. No repotting. No bags of potting soil. Just light, water and good airflow.
