Protecting Plants from Frost: Covers, Mulch & Timing

Practical methods for shielding plants from early frosts

When temperatures start to dip, those chilly fall nights can sneak up fast. Protecting your garden from frost doesn’t have to be complicated — with a little planning, you can keep your plants healthy and extend your growing season well into the colder months.

The first step is knowing when frost is likely to occur. Check your local forecast and note the average first frost date in your area. Even a light frost around 32°F can damage tender annuals, vegetables, and tropicals. When nights are predicted to drop below 36°F, it’s time to take action.

One of the easiest ways to guard against frost damage is by covering plants overnight. Frost cloths, old sheets, or lightweight blankets work beautifully. Drape them loosely over plants in the evening and secure the edges with rocks or garden pins to trap warmth from the soil. Be sure to remove the covers in the morning once temperatures rise — and avoid using plastic directly on plants, since it can cause damage where it touches leaves.

Mulching is another simple but effective method. A 2–4 inch layer of shredded bark, straw, or fallen leaves helps insulate the soil and protect roots from sudden temperature swings. Just keep the mulch a few inches away from stems to prevent rot.

If a frost is coming, water your plants the day before. Moist soil retains more heat than dry soil, creating a slightly warmer microclimate that can make all the difference. And when it comes to clean-up and pruning, wait until spring. Leaving stems and seed heads on perennials provides natural insulation, adds winter interest, and supports pollinators that overwinter in plant debris.

Tender annuals, tropical plants, and warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and basil are the most at risk. For potted plants, move containers indoors or group them together in a sheltered spot overnight — pots cool down much faster than garden soil. Use frost covers only overnight unless temperatures stay low during the day, and always uncover plants when the sun returns.

With a little foresight and a few simple tools — covers, mulch, and good timing — you can protect your garden from frost and enjoy blooms and harvests just a little longer.
